Qatar Geological Mapping Project - Phase II

Nationally consistent geospatial geological data included at National scale geological Maps enable better national recourses and land management decisions, support scientific missions, enable the effective enforcement of regulatory responsibilities, and countless other activities. National scale geological Maps usually include information about the spatial distribution and properties of the geological formations providing at the same time key information about the lithostratigraphic structure of the country. The Qatar Geological Mapping Project (Phase II) exceeds the purpose of establishing a simple national scale geological mapping, providing a suite of products and services that gives access to surface and subsurface geospatial information regarding the geological structure of the peninsula of Qatar and its surrounding islands.

STEMMOS

Satellite Observation of Earth, Moon and Mars in Schools

The STEMMOS project aims to create an educational program for trainers to teach EMMO (Earth, Moon and Mars Observations) science to students and enhance their STEAM and soft skills. It will analyse best practices, enhance trainers’ knowledge and skills, explore innovative teaching methods, organise training sessions for trainers and pilot programs for student, develop specifications for an experiential space science festival, and ensure program uptake at the European level through targeted sharing of results.

Promoting ESG principles and healthy nutritional habits to increase competitiveness, market diversification and effective communication for consumers in Adriatic-Ionian aquaculture and fishery sectors

FISHIMPACT is an Intereg (IPA Adriatic Ionian) 36-month project aiming at elaborating a comprehensive strategy and workplan to promote actions and measures supporting SMEs of the aquaculture and fishery sectors development and modernization through the introduction of quality and sustainable requirements.

Climate-Resilient Development Pathways in Metropolitan Regions of Europe

CARMINE’s overarching goal is to help the metropolitan communities become more climate resilient, by co-producing knowledge-based tools, strategies and plans for enhanced adaptation and mitigation actions addressing the Charter of the EU Mission on Adaptation to CC by 2030. To achieve this goal, focusing on a 2030-2035 timeframe and with longer perspectives up to 2050, CARMINE aims to: (1) Co-create and co-develop decision-support services and guidelines for enhanced resilience and adaptive capacity, including early warning and dis-aster risk management systems; (2) Cooperate closely with local to regional communities (stakeholders and users), decision-, and policy-makers (local authorities) to co-develop cross-sectoral frameworks for adaptation and mitigation actions; (3) Deliver science-based R&I roadmaps for multi-level climate governance supporting local adaptation assessments and plans.

Emergent soil, plant and food onsite digital services on chemical and biological contaminants

E-SPFdigit is a 36-month innovation action project with a systemic approach and integrated piloting at the heart of the project, which aims to revolutionize monitoring and decision-making in agriculture. The AI-driven tools will enhance real-time detection of contaminants such as PFAS, pesticides, and heavy metals, improving environmental sustainability and food safety across the entire production chain.

UNICORN

Copernicus emergency Applications for Resilience addressing businesses’ needs and policy making - UNICORN

UNICORN focuses on developing Copernicus emergency applications using Earth Observation technologies to address extreme events (fires, floods) and geohazards (volcanoes). It aims to enhance early warning, forecasting, and hazard monitoring for a resilient society and more effective emergency responses. UNICORN provides innovative solutions for local authorities, policymakers, citizens, and industries, helping them prepare for and respond to natural disasters. The project features four use cases from different European regions and hazards, using scalable, transferable services tailored to user needs, improving forecasting and emergency management across Europe.

Sat4GAIA

Greek National Satellite Space Project: Axis 3 “Land Monitoring Service” – Sat4GAIA

Sat4GAIA proposes a Geospatial Thematic Service for Land Monitoring to be implemented in the Axis 3 Greek Governmental Hub and be transferred to operations by the end of the project. The purpose is to develop a holistic set of data-driven applications making full use of the data from Axis 1.1, 1.2 and 2, as well as relevant third-party data could enhance efficiency and sustainability of the service. The project focuses on the design, development, validation, integration, and delivery of the Land Monitoring Service, which includes the following Modules: Land Use/Land Cover Mapping, Deformation Monitoring and Urban Analytics Services.

Sat4Φorest

Greek National Satellite Space Project: Axis 3 “Forest Monitoring Service” - Sat4Φorest

Sat4Φorest is a critical initiative under Greece’s National SmallSat Programme, funded by the RRF. It aims to enhance forest and environmental management, support fire prevention and control, and ensure compliance with EU regulations. By leveraging advanced satellite technology and AI, this service will provide comprehensive and continuous monitoring of Greece's valuable forest resources and protected areas. The purpose is to develop a holistic set of data-driven applications making full use of the data from Axis 1.1, 1.2 and 2, as well as relevant third-party data could enhance efficiency and sustainability of the service. The project focuses on the design, development and operational implementation of end-to-end services value chains, covering the process from the data collection up to the deployment and delivery of geospatial products. The Forest Monitoring Service includes: Forest Type and Forest Fuel Maps and Forest & Natura Areas Monitoring.

UNIVERSWATER

Universal interoperative sustainable agri-water management platform

UNIVERSWATER will develop a universal agri-water management platform underpinned by an interoperative and modular suite of complementary technologies—sensor systems (including data acquisition and communication), earth observation, data analytics and modelling for decision support and nature and technology-based remediation approaches for several pollutants (e.g., pesticides, antibiotics and other CECs, salinity, nutrients, antibiotic resistant genes and bacteria). Such a platform will assist farmers and water stakeholders in implementing local reclamation and reuse approaches to improve water quantity and quality, as well as pesticides/fertilisers addition, while satisfying the requirements of crop growth.

Climaca

Blending Earth observations and agricultural knowledge through Artificial Intelligence towards a scalable monitoring and assessment scheme for agricultural ecosystems

Climaca will establish data-driven and domain-aware developments to assess the impact of policy-relevant interventions on the overall sustainability and performance of agricultural ecosystems. In this sense, big space-borne EO, advanced ICT technologies, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be the key enablers in developing actionable recommendations for policymakers to achieve resilient agriculture.

ASIMOV

AI Trustworthy Applications for Climate

NOA as prime supported by the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and WIRELESSINFO launched ASIMOV. ASIMOV aims to define, demonstrate and evaluate Machine Learning (ML) architectures that can identify extreme values by super-resolving satellite-based ECVs that are crucial components of a comprehensive system for predicting wildfire risk and detecting and monitoring fires in real time. The activity will improve knowledge and expertise in super-resolution of satellite-based ECVs. The validation process for the system and its demonstration will take place in Greece.

Copernicus Emergency Management Service - Risk and Recovery Mapping

The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) uses satellite imagery and other geospatial data to provide free of charge mapping service in cases of natural disasters, human-made emergency situations and humanitarian crises throughout the world. Risk and Recovery Mapping provides on-demand geospatial information in support of Disaster Management activities not related to immediate response. This applies in particular to activities dealing with prevention, preparedness, disaster risk reduction and recovery phases

Destination Renewable Energy: Renewable energy solutions using DESP data and tools

Destination Renewable Energy (DRE) is one of the Use Cases to be implemented as part of the Destination Earth Service Platform (DESP). Energy is at the heart of the challenge of achieving both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. Renewable energy systems (solar and wind) are weather and climate dependent, so the transition to clean energy requires improved climate information and services for the energy sector. Climate services and satellite data are means that can be used to develop applications to ensure the resilience of energy systems to climate-related shocks and inform energy efficiency measures..

MedEWSa

Mediterranean and pan-European forecast and Early Warning System against natural hazards

Natural hazards, such as extreme weather events, are exacerbated by climate change. As a result, emergency responses are becoming more protracted, expensive, frequent, and stretching limited available resources. This is especially apparent in rapidly warming regions. MedEWSa addresses these challenges by providing novel solutions to ensure timely, precise, and actionable impact and finance forecasting, and early warning systems (EWS) that support the rapid deployment of first responders to vulnerable areas. Specifically, MedEWSa will deliver a sophisticated, comprehensive, and innovative pan-European–Mediterranean–African solution comprising a range of complementary services. Building on existing tools MedEWSa will develop a fully integrated impact-based multi-hazard EWS. This call contained five expected outcomes, all of which will be specifically addressed by MedEWSa. Led by WMO, MedEWSa will be an exemplar of the UN Secretary General’s March 2022 call to ensure that everyone on Earth is protected from extreme weather and climate-related hazards by EWS within the next five years.

Through eight carefully selected pilot sites (areas in Europe, the southern Mediterranean, and Africa with a history of being impacted by natural hazards and extreme events with cascading effects), four twins will be created:

Twin #1: Greece (Attica) – Ethiopia (National Parks): wildfires and extreme weather events (droughts, wind)
Twin #2: Italy (Venice) – Egypt (Alexandria / Nile Delta): coastal floods and storm surges
Twin #3: Slovakia (Kosice) – Georgia (Tbilisi): floods and landslides
Twin #4: Spain (Catalonia) – Sweden (countrywide): heatwaves, droughts and wildfires.

The twins will bridge areas with different climatic/physiographic conditions, yet subject to similar hazards, and are well positioned to deliver long-term bi-directional knowledge transfer. They will demonstrate the transferability and versatility of the tools developed in MedEWSa.

EuroGEO Secretariat

Establishing the EuroGEO Secretariat to support the EuroGEO initiative - EuroGEOSec

The EuroGEOSec project (led by ARMINES) brings together a European consortium built from the core group of the team involved in the H2020 e-shape (EuroGEO Showcases: Applications powered by Europe) project and will collaborate with the Joint Research Centre Knowledge Center on Earth Observation (JRC-KCEO) to support the EuroGEO vision and to prepare the transition of the EuroGEO initiative into a sustainable endeavour, by setting-up a EuroGEO secretariat. The overarching goal of the EuroGEOSec project is to support the coordination of the EuroGEO initiative and develop a sustainability plan guiding its long-term operation. This will be achieved by establishing the EuroGEO Secretariat with the mission to (i) strengthen GEO-related coordination mechanisms at European and national levels, (ii) support increased innovation, space application development and reinforcement of the European space data ecosystem concept; (iii) foster international cooperation to help stimulate the market and promote European technology and services; (iv) contribute to the European Green Deal objectives and the European strategy for data (EU Data Spaces) by further deploying and exploiting the use of EO towards a strengthened Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). The project delivers the definition, set-up, operation and ramp-up of the EuroGEO Secretariat serving the EuroGEO initiative and its ecosystem of actors, and developing support services and a sustainability strategy that will inform the long-term operation of the EuroGEO initiative.

Creating student communities for the integration of crowdsourcing data, remote sensing and geoinformatics aiming to mitigation of climate change - Space EDUnity

SPACE EDUnity is an ERASMUS project that aims to foster student communities focused on preventing and mitigating natural disasters through crowdsourcing. The project leverages both in-situ data collection and satellite data to enhance existing services addressing the climate crisis. Moreover, it emphasizes the active involvement of student communities in disseminating crucial information within their localities.

Open framework for boosting EU High Value Datasets from Public Sector - BeOpen

BeOpen will enable the development of new digital and AI services by facilitating access to and use of EU Public Sector High Value Datasets. BeOpen will develop a holistic framework to improve interoperability, semantics and quality of public sector High Value Datasets, easing the creation of a new generation of EU-wide services and AI capabilities. The aim of BeOpen is to facilitate organisations and public entities to re-use Open Data across the EU for the development of information products and services. The overall BeOpen framework will be applied in 8 real-life pilots across 6 countries, using regional datasets.

Soils for Europe

Soils are under multiple pressures, including climate change, urbanization, pollution, overexploitation, and biodiversity loss. The specific objectives of the EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ highlights the necessity of: i) actionable research and innovation roadmaps for its concretization; and, ii) an overarching transdisciplinary agenda to identify the thematic and regional trade-offs and synergies that allow the sustainable use, management, and protection of European soils. Defining such an agenda requires the direct involvement of a wide range of stakeholders, bringing together multiple perspectives and ecological, environmental, economic and social contexts. To do that, at the core of SOLO will be the implementation of Think Tanks, one for each Soil Mission objective, with the aim of co-creating knowledge and identifying the knowledge gaps, drivers, bottlenecks, and novel approaches, as well as suggesting KPIs to monitor the progress of the Mission R&I related activities. SOLO will also address the potential differences in the regional implementation of the Soil Mission by testing its approach in four co-creation Regional Nodes, generating their own regional roadmaps that will be matched with the European ones. These explicit linkages between the co-creation mechanisms and the different project components aim to produce a shared understanding of needs and comprehensive identification of research and innovation priorities and other critical activities for the success of the Soil Mission.

Preventing fire events by rediscovering and extending deep learning methods - PREFERRED

The escalation of climate change, all over the world, increases the vulnerability of forests to fires, and threatens their very existence as well as, especially in the wildland urban interface (WUI) areas, the life and safety of citizens, social cohesion and prosperity. The plethora of recorded events with many victims and severe destruction of infrastructures & properties, highlights the danger of the environment we live in and the critical need for the most effective management of events through informed decisions (timely & valid information).

Cross-sector dialogue for Wildfire Risk Management- Firelogue

In line with increasing demands for more public participation, transparency and fairness in risk management institutions and procedures, FIRELOGUE aims to coordinate and support the 3 funded Innovation Actions (IAs) by integrating their findings across stakeholder groups and fire management phases. It therefore builds on different formats to process the existing WFRM knowledge and innovations as developed by the IAs to translate them into the FIRELOGUE platform. The FIRELOGUE platform together with Communication Booster services such as brokering expertise disseminates the insights and technologies developed by the IAs and integrated by the FIRELOGUE project.

SOILGUARD

Sustainable soil management to unleash soil biodiversity potential and increase environmental, economic and social wellbeing - SOILGUARD.

SOILGUARD envisages a future where the conservation of soil biodiversity and the environmental, economic and social wellbeing of EU biogeographical regions is guaranteed. Unsustainable management and climate change are increasing land degradation and threatening soil biodiversity. Urgent action is required to mainstream sustainable soil management practices and the perception of soil biodiversity as a key nature-based solution to face land degradation and climate change stressors. The efficacy of this call to action depends on addressing major knowledge gaps related to biodiversity and soil-mediated nature’s contribution to people. Soil biodiversity assessment emerges as a key challenge to be overcome. SOILGUARD will co-create a conceptual and analytical framework with the potential to become the global standard for future assessments of soil biodiversity status and its contribution to soil multifunctionality and human wellbeing. This framework will be validated in an innovative experimental design, combining multiple study sites across biomes and regional land degradation gradients with in-situ climate change simulations. Thus, creating the evidence to fill the gaps of knowledge and quantify the environmental, economic and social consequences of unsustainable soil management. All knowledge co-created will be shared through SOILGUARDIANS, a predictive tool based on the causal links between soil biodiversity, soil multifunctionality and wellbeing to support stakeholders on the transition to sustainable management. The SOILGUARD’s network of knowledge and the connectivity enabled by SOILGUARDIANS app will create an ecosystem of innovation for users to showcase, learn and share experiences. SOILGUARD will co-create evidence-based conservation recommendations for policies and frameworks at EU and international level and will support Member States commitments under the Global Soil Partnership.

EXCELSIOR CoE – ERATOSTHENES: Excellence Research Centre for Earth Surveillance and Space-Based Monitoring of the Environment

The project SWeFS consisted a complementary action that supported the further development of the innovative FIREHUB system of services of the BEYOND Center of Excellence , which offers real-time fire monitoring and burnt scar mapping applications; the FIREHUB system has awarded the Best Challenge Service award in the Copernicus Master's competition of 2014.

CEMS Activation: Forest fuel mapping and fire hazard in France

We're excited to announce that the successful collaboration between our team from NOA/BEYOND, NTUA, and IDCOM, under the supervision of JRC CEMS, has resulted in valuable scientific insights on forest fire risk assessment in northeastern France.

Structural vegetation layers relevant for fuel mapping were generated using LiDAR and aerial imagery, and fire hazard maps were produced by analyzing meteorological scenarios to assess wildfire risk.

Developed by BEYOND, FireHUB delivers real-time wildfire detection and smoke dispersion forecasts across Greece, Southern Europe, North Africa, Balkans, Black Sea and the Middle East—supporting civil protection and decision-making.

Η Επιχειρησιακή Μονάδα BEYOND του Εθνικού Αστεροσκοπείου Αθηνών (ΕΑΑ), σε συνεργασία με το Δίκτυο ΠΡΑΞΗ/ΙΤΕ, διοργάνωσε στις 15 Μαΐου 2025 στην Αλεξανδρούπολη ημερίδα με τίτλο “Εργαλεία Copernicus για τις πλημμύρες του ποταμού Έβρου” (regional workshop «Copernicus tools for the flooding of Evros river»), στο πλαίσιο του ευρωπαϊκού έργου FPCUP (Caroline Herschel Framework Partnership Agreement on Copernicus User Uptake).

An in-person meeting held on May 6, 2025, during the GEO Global Forum in Rome, brought together 27 participants from across the GEO Working Groups (WGs), other GEO Work Programme (GWP) activities, and the wider GEO community to discuss and flesh out details for a potential GEO joint Working Group activity on the Climate-Biodiversity-Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) nexus under the post-2025 GWP enhancing linkage towards Earth intelligence.

Africa, Middle East and the Balkans. The Center's creation supported by the competitive framework of EU FP7-REGPOT-2012-2013-1 and costed 2,3 ΜEuros. It generated unique excellence and EO research infrastructure for the region. It maintains a fully operational and self-sustained activity, through competitive funding from Space research and operational projects supported by EU, ESA and International Funding Organisations (FP7, H2020, ESA EOEP, WB, EIB, etc.).
